Fairfax Virginia History and General Information
On January 14th, 1805 Fairfax, then known as the Town of Providence, was founded. That was 200 years ago, and in 2005 residents will be celebrating year long for this 200th birthday. Fairfax is a town of much history. In 1874 the name was changed to the ‘Town of Fairfax’ and later updated in 1961 to the City of Fairfax.
Fairfax Virginia is now home to more then 21,000 residents over 6.3 Square miles situated in the heart of Virginia roughly 12 miles west of Washington DC
Fairfax Virginia’s oldest building, Historic Fairfax Elementary was built in 1873, at what was then a large sum of $2,750. This, the oldest two-story brick school house served as the main school in Fairfax until 1912 when a new facility was opened, and is listed in the National Historic Places Registry as a Virginia Landmark.

Fairfax Virginia Transit System
The CUE bus in Fairfax travels throughout the city between George Mason University and the Vienna Fairfax – GMU Metro Station. For GMU students, staff and faculty fares are free for CUE rides. There are also other bus lines running through the city including the Fairfax Connector and the Metro Bus.
